Hair Snoods
Hair net snoods have been around for thousands of years. Originally they were first developed in the 1st century and became widely used during the Middle Ages by women.
In WWII, women that worked in factories began wore snoods to help ration the number of cotton fabric materials available during the wartime. Since then, hair snoods have become more popular among Middle Eastern, Jewish women and for specific ceremonies.
Although snoods have been in fashion in Europe since the 1860’s, Americans simply referred to these as hairnets. This means the term “snood” isn’t as popular in the US as Europe.
Nowadays you can buy hair net snoods in a variety of colours and fabrics ranging from $5 up to $20 in price. Some websites even design special items for Weddings and other events.

What are Hair Net Snoods?
Specially designed hair net snoods are made from a micro-fibre fabric without any hair band or lining. Hair can be seen through this net.
There are a number of different types of hair snoods that you can buy. Some of these have a 100% net appearance which contains the hair, while others have a hard hair band at the front of the head which locks it in place. A small throb or crocheted of fine thread than holds the hair behind the head.
The advantages of wearing hair snoods are that it bunches the hair together. This is desirable for many women who don’t have time to make their hair in the morning and it can also serve hygienic purposes for women that work in kitchens or factories.
When applied to the head, the snood can protect the hair and keep it bundled together with a net-like fabric. Usually hair snoods have gaps in them, which allow others to see the hair. In the case of Jewish women’s snoods a special type of snood is required in order to cover the hair (in accordance with Jewish Law about Hair Covering).
Hairnet snoods are also very cheap in comparison to other hair accessories and products. You can buy them in a huge range of colours, fabrics and sizes online. For example, you can buy a range of hair net snoods from CoverYourHair.com in over 20 colours such as blue, green, black, purple, navy blue, white, orange and more. The average price of snoods here is just $10.99.
Beard Snoods
Although the term snood has generally been replaced with the word “hairnet”, beard snoods are still very common in many industries such as food production. Unlike hair snoods, these bundle the beard together and fit around the lower half of the head to make it more hygienic for men to work in food environments.
